The DMEPOS (Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies) CBP only includes the items and services covered under Medicare Part B and described under section 1847(a)(2) of the Social Security Act.

What does this mean, really?
- Medicare Part B includes outpatient equipment used at home and certain medical supplies. It does NOT include inpatient hospital care or prescription drugs.
- Section 1847(a)(2) of the Social Security Act specifically lists categories of DMEPOS items that: can be competitively bid, are commonly used, and are appropriate for standardized pricing through supplier contracts.
Two common questions arise:
- First, do exceptions to the DMEPOS CBP apply to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), CGM supplies, ostomy, tracheostomy, or urological supplies?
Answer: no.
- Next, does the DMEPOS CBP include items covered under Medicare Part D (prescription drugs)?
Answer: no, once again.
