What Items Are Covered in the DMEPOS CBP?

What does this mean, really?

  • Medicare Part B includes outpatient equipment used at home and certain medical supplies. It does NOT include inpatient hospital care or prescription drugs.
  • Section 1847(a)(2) of the Social Security Act specifically lists categories of DMEPOS items that: can be competitively bid, are commonly used, and are appropriate for standardized pricing through supplier contracts.

Two common questions arise:

  1. First, do exceptions to the DMEPOS CBP apply to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), CGM supplies, ostomy, tracheostomy, or urological supplies?

    Answer: no.
  2. Next, does the DMEPOS CBP include items covered under Medicare Part D (prescription drugs)?

    Answer: no, once again.
